Are you a rooftop solar homeowner (or planning to be)? Good news! HECO’s Bring Your Own Device Plus (BYOD Plus) program is designed to help you add battery storage and get rewarded for it, while supporting Hawaii’s clean-energy future.
✅ About the BYOD Plus Program
BYOD Plus offers cash incentives and monthly credits if you install a new energy storage system (battery) paired with your rooftop solar system.
Rather than just storing battery power for your home, the program also invites you to be a grid partner: you pick a 2-hour window each day during which your battery may export any surplus to the grid.
💡 Key Features
- Minimum Size: At least 1 kW committed export capacity is required.
- Five-Year Participation Term: The contract runs for five years. If you end early you’ll need to repay the incentive on a prorated basis.
- Advanced Meter Required: Your home must have an “advanced meter” installed to enable the two-way data monitoring for the program. If your home doesn’t already have this, HECO will install this free of charge.
- New Battery Paired with Solar: The battery must be newly installed and paired with a solar system. Existing batteries or stand-alone battery systems do not qualify.
🌱 A Win For Homeowners
- Instant Value: You get $400 per kW of committed battery export capacity upfront after contract execution (no cap). If you qualify for Low-Moderate Income (LMI), you receive $800 per kW upfront, helping offset the cost of your battery system.
- Monthly Savings: In addition to the upfront incentive, you’ll earn monthly bill credits for any energy your battery exports to the grid during your selected BYOD+ 2-hour window.
- Home-First Power: Your battery always serves your home’s energy needs first. During your selected BYOD Plus 2-hour window, your battery will discharge the committed amount of energy—powering your home first, with any unused portion exported to the grid for credits.
