Why is grid power so expensive in Hawai’i?
When you are located in the middle of the world’s largest ocean and don’t produce your own coal, oil, or natural gas, fuel must be imported by ship. We all know that shipping costs to Hawaii is NO JOKE! This is just one of the factors that mark up the prices of grid power for Hawai’i residents.
Another major factor is that coal, oil, gas, and fuel are non-renewable sources, meaning, the more these sources are depleted, the higher the prices will be (i.e. supply and demand). This is why making the change to a renewable source of energy like solar will not only give you immediate savings, but it will save you A LOT of money in the future as energy rates continue to rise.
